Integration of Base, Pelvis, and Torso
Photographing how the posture is built from the ground upward
LESSON 7
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Every posture develops from the relationship between the base of support, the pelvis, and the torso. When these three elements work together, the pose appears organized and stable. Learning to recognize this integration allows the photographer to frame the image so the structure of the posture becomes immediately understandable.
Begin by observing the base of the pose. Notice how the feet, knees, or hips connect to the ground and how the pelvis responds to that foundation. From there, follow the movement upward through the torso and into the arms, head, and gaze. When the base and torso are visually connected, the posture appears unified rather than fragmented.
Camera position plays an important role in showing this relationship. Slight adjustments in angle or height can clarify how the pelvis aligns over the base and how the torso continues the movement. By choosing an angle that reveals this progression, the photographer helps the viewer see how the posture is constructed.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a posture from an angle that clearly shows the connection between the base, pelvis, and torso. Then take a second image from a position where that relationship is less visible. Compare the images and note which photograph more clearly communicates how the posture is built.
