Continuity Through the Spine
Seeing the central pathway of movement
PART II: LESSON 6
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
The spine often serves as the visual anchor of a yoga posture. Whether the movement expresses length, flexion, rotation, or extension, the direction of the spine guides how the viewer understands the pose. Learning to see this central pathway allows the photographer to compose images that feel organized and coherent.
Begin by identifying the general direction of the spine within the posture. Notice whether it creates a vertical lift, a gentle curve, or a spiral movement. Once this pathway is clear, position yourself so the line of the spine remains visible and uninterrupted within the frame. Small shifts in camera placement can greatly affect how clearly this line is communicated.
When the spinal pathway is easy to follow, the rest of the posture often becomes easier to read. Arms, legs, and gaze naturally support the central movement, allowing the photograph to tell a unified visual story.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a posture from two positions: one where the spinal line is clearly visible and another where it is partially obscured. Compare the images and observe how the viewer’s understanding of the pose changes when the central pathway is either emphasized or hidden.
