Flexion
Photographing forward movement and curvature with clarity
PART V: LESSON 21
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Flexion-based postures often express inward movement, rounding, or folding through the spine. These shapes invite the photographer to observe how the curve develops and where the movement originates. Clear photography allows the viewer to understand the continuity of the arc rather than seeing the posture as a compressed shape.
Observe how the practitioner enters the forward movement. Notice whether the fold begins from the hips, the spine, or a combination of both. When the pathway of movement remains visible, the photograph communicates the intelligence of the posture rather than only its outer form.
Framing becomes especially important in flexion poses. Leave enough visual space around the body so the curve can be clearly perceived. Cropping too tightly may obscure the direction of the movement and make the posture appear visually unclear.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a forward-folding posture from two different distances, one tightly framed and one with additional surrounding space. Compare the images and observe which photograph more clearly communicates the curvature and direction of the movement. Reflect on how framing influences visual understanding.
