Honoring the Body’s Truth in Each Moment
Photographing what is present rather than what is expected
LESSON 10
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Every body expresses a posture differently. Differences in mobility, strength, proportion, and experience shape how each practitioner arrives in the pose. Photography becomes more meaningful when it reflects the truth of the practitioner’s experience rather than an idealized image of what the posture “should” look like.
As you prepare to photograph, take time to observe the natural expression of the pose in front of you. Notice how the practitioner organizes their base, how the breath moves, and where the posture feels most stable. When the image honors what is authentically present, it communicates clarity and respect.
Avoid directing the practitioner into shapes that feel forced or uncomfortable for the sake of the photograph. Instead, adjust your angle, framing, and timing so the image supports the practitioner’s own expression of the pose. This approach builds trust and results in photographs that feel grounded and genuine.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a posture without requesting adjustments to create a “perfect” shape. Focus instead on timing, framing, and lighting that highlight the practitioner’s natural expression. Review the image and reflect on how honoring authenticity changes the tone of the photograph.
