Inversion
Photographing changes in orientation and balance
LESSON 24
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Inversions shift the body’s relationship to gravity, creating a new orientation that can be visually striking. Clear photography of these postures allows the viewer to understand how balance and support are organized even when the body is upside down.
Observe where the primary support points occur in the inversion. Notice how the hands, forearms, shoulders, or head create the base that stabilizes the posture. When these support structures remain visible in the frame, the viewer can better understand how the pose is maintained.
Camera position strongly affects how the inversion is perceived. Shooting from an angle that shows both the base and the extended lines of the posture often communicates the organization of the pose more clearly than a tightly cropped image. Allow enough space within the frame for the viewer to see the full relationship between grounding and lift.
Practice Invitation
Photograph an inversion from two different angles: one that emphasizes the extended lines of the posture and another that clearly shows the base of support. Compare the images and observe which photograph best communicates how the posture maintains balance. Reflect on how framing affects the viewer’s understanding of orientation.
