Kneeling Postures
Photographing transitional foundations and balance strategies
LESSON 18
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Kneeling postures often represent a transitional relationship between standing and seated forms. The base of support shifts through the knees, shins, and feet, creating a different visual expression of stability. Recognizing this foundation allows the photographer to frame the posture so the viewer can understand how balance is maintained.
Observe how the practitioner distributes weight across the knees and lower legs. Notice whether the torso rises directly above the base or whether the posture expresses a forward or backward shift. When the base and the direction of lift are clearly visible, the photograph communicates both structure and intention.
Angle of view plays an important role in kneeling poses. A slight side perspective often helps reveal how the torso organizes itself over the base, while a direct front view may emphasize symmetry. Experiment with both perspectives to determine which most clearly communicates the posture.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a kneeling posture from both the front and the side. Compare the images and observe which perspective most clearly shows how the body organizes support through the knees and lower legs. Reflect on how perspective changes the viewer’s understanding of balance.
