Lateral Bend
Photographing asymmetry with balance and clarity
LESSON 23
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Lateral bending postures introduce asymmetry into the body’s structure. One side lengthens while the other side compresses, creating directional movement across the frame. Clear photography helps the viewer understand both the direction of the bend and the stability that supports it.
Observe how the practitioner organizes the base before the lateral movement begins. Notice whether the feet, knees, or hips remain steady as the upper body travels to one side. When the foundation remains visible, the viewer can better understand how balance is maintained within the asymmetrical shape.
Camera placement can emphasize the direction of the movement. A perspective that aligns with the direction of the side bend often allows the viewer to follow the lengthening pathway more easily. Adjust your position until the arc of the movement appears continuous from the base through the upper body.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a lateral bending posture from two different sides of the practitioner. Compare the images and observe which perspective most clearly communicates the direction of the lengthening side of the body. Reflect on how camera position influences the visual balance of the pose.
