Light and Shadow
Using illumination to reveal structure and depth
LESSON 26
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Light shapes how the body is perceived within a photograph. Direction, intensity, and contrast influence whether the posture appears flat or dimensional. Learning to observe how light interacts with the body allows the photographer to reveal structure, texture, and depth without relying heavily on editing.
Begin by noticing the direction of the available light source. Side lighting often emphasizes the contours of the body, while direct frontal lighting can reduce visible depth. Observe how shadows fall across the limbs and torso, and adjust your position so the essential lines of the posture remain clearly visible.
Small changes in placement can significantly affect the image. Moving a few steps to the side, adjusting camera height, or asking the practitioner to rotate slightly toward the light may improve clarity while maintaining the authenticity of the pose.
Practice Invitation
Photograph the same posture in two lighting conditions: one where the light comes from the front and one where it comes from the side. Compare the images and observe how the direction of light changes the perception of depth, contour, and structure. Reflect on which lighting condition best communicates the form of the pose.
