Range with Integrity
Photographing expansion while preserving structure
LESSON 9
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Range of motion can be visually compelling, but clarity of structure is what allows the viewer to understand the posture. In yoga asana photography, the goal is not simply to capture how far a pose extends, but to photograph the moment when expansion remains organized and supported.
Observe how the practitioner moves toward the full expression of the posture. Notice whether the spine maintains continuity, whether the base remains steady, and whether the breath continues to move freely. When these elements remain present, the image communicates both openness and stability.
Camera placement can help emphasize integrity. Choose an angle that allows the viewer to see the support beneath the movement rather than focusing only on the outer shape. This approach highlights the intelligence of the pose rather than the intensity of the stretch.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a posture at two stages: an earlier stage of the movement and a deeper stage. Compare the images and determine which photograph best communicates both expansion and structural support. Reflect on how the position of the camera influenced what the viewer could see.
