Rotation
Photographing spiral movement with directional clarity
LESSON 22
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Rotational postures express movement around a central axis. These shapes often contain layered lines that can become visually complex if the camera position does not clearly show the direction of the twist. Learning to position the camera so the spiral pathway is visible allows the photograph to communicate the intention of the pose.
Observe where the rotation begins. Notice whether the twist originates in the base, the pelvis, or the upper spine. When the starting point and the direction of the spiral are both visible, the viewer can easily understand the organization of the posture.
Camera placement is especially important in rotational poses. A slight shift to the side of the movement often reveals the spiral more clearly than a direct front-facing position. Move gradually around the practitioner until the rotational pathway appears easy to follow.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a rotational posture from two different angles: one directly in front and one slightly to the side of the twist. Compare the images and observe which angle most clearly communicates the direction and depth of the spiral. Reflect on how camera position influences the visibility of rotation.
