Seated Postures
Photographing stability through the foundation of the hips
LESSON 17
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Seated postures shift the primary base of support from the feet to the pelvis and hips. This change alters how balance, lift, and alignment are expressed in the photograph. Understanding this foundation allows the photographer to frame the pose so the viewer can clearly see how the posture is supported.
Observe how the practitioner establishes contact with the ground. Notice whether the sitting bones appear evenly grounded and how the spine rises from that base. When the connection between the pelvis and the lift of the torso is visible, the photograph communicates both stability and ease.
Camera height can strongly influence how this relationship is perceived. Shooting too high or too low may distort the sense of grounding. Adjust your position until the base of the posture and the direction of the spine are both clearly readable.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a seated posture from two different camera heights. Review the images and observe which height most clearly shows the connection between the pelvis and the upward lift of the spine. Reflect on how camera placement affects the viewer’s perception of stability.
