Standing Postures
Photographing vertical alignment and grounded stability
PART IV: LESSON 16
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Standing postures often highlight the relationship between grounding and lift. The feet create the foundation, while the spine and upper body extend upward from that base. Clear photography of these poses allows the viewer to understand how stability and expansion work together.
Begin by observing how the practitioner distributes weight through the feet. Notice whether the base appears balanced and whether the vertical line of the posture can be followed easily from the ground upward. Position yourself so the relationship between the feet, pelvis, and spine remains visible within the frame.
Standing poses often benefit from a slightly wider frame that shows the full connection between the base and the upper body. When this relationship is clearly visible, the photograph communicates strength, steadiness, and intention.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a standing posture from a position that clearly shows the connection between the feet and the lift of the spine. Then take a second image where the feet are partially cropped. Compare the images and observe how the viewer’s understanding of grounding changes when the base is either included or removed.
