Supine Postures
Photographing structure when the body meets the ground
LESSON 19
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
In supine postures, the relationship to gravity changes as the back of the body receives support from the floor. This creates an opportunity to photograph subtle organization rather than visible effort. The photographer’s task is to frame the image so the viewer can clearly see how the body arranges itself across the ground.
Observe how the spine, shoulders, and pelvis make contact with the surface. Notice whether the limbs extend symmetrically or create directional movement across the frame. When the lines of the posture remain clear and uncluttered, the photograph communicates calm and stability.
Consider camera height carefully. Shooting too low may flatten the form visually, while a slightly elevated position often reveals the shape of the posture more clearly. Adjust your angle until the essential lines of the pose are easy to read.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a supine posture from two different heights, one closer to floor level and one slightly elevated. Compare the images and observe which perspective most clearly communicates the structure and direction of the pose. Reflect on how camera height influences visual clarity.
