The Honesty of Transition
Photographing the movement between poses
PART III: LESSON 11
Yoga Asana Photography Course
Capturing the Practice from Behind the Lens
Transitions often reveal as much information as the final posture. During the movement between shapes, the body shows how it organizes support, shifts weight, and responds to balance. Photographing these moments can create images that feel dynamic and authentic.
Rather than waiting only for the peak expression of a pose, observe how the practitioner travels into and out of the movement. Notice where the weight transfers, how the spine adjusts, and how the breath guides the transition. These moments often contain natural expressions that are difficult to recreate through direction alone.
Timing becomes essential. Instead of shooting continuously, anticipate the transition and prepare your frame in advance. When the moment arrives, a single well-timed photograph often communicates more clearly than a series of rapid images.
Practice Invitation
Photograph a practitioner moving from one posture into another. Capture at least three images during the transition and review them afterward. Identify which image most clearly expresses the flow of movement and reflect on what visual cues helped you anticipate that moment.
